Les Baux is a hilltop town which crowns the Alpilles Mountains.
It was an important citadel in the Middle Ages when the Lords of Baux were nortorious warriors. Many feudal lords could trace their lineage back to one of the "three kings" of Christmas-card fame, Balthazar.
The sun-bleached ruins are carved into, out of, and on top of a rock 650 feet above the valley floor.
The residents were more thankful for their fortifications than for their dramatic views.
In the 11th century, Les Baux was a powerhouse in southern France, controlling about 80 villages.
