Carcassonne: St Nazaire Church

The earliest part of the church was begun in the 6th century. Then in the 12th century that early church was replaced by a Romanesque edifice.
The nave is all that remains of that Roman influence because when the North conquered the South, Carcassonne became part of France...and France set out to
destroy all Romanesque churches and replace them with the Gothic syle of the North.

The Organ is one of the oldest in existence, and dates from 1522.
And, interestingly, only classical pieces can be played on it (is that by design of the instrument--or order from the historians?)

As all stained glass windows, these 13th and 14th century windows were designed as "teaching tools" for the illiterate.

I am always so taken by the Gothic design of the upward-reaching arches, which certainly fulfills the intent to cause people to look heaven-ward and to honor God.
It works for me.
