These donkeys, the
Baudets du Poitu, are a special breed which have been used for hundreds of years as the beasts of burdens for the salt wagons of these islands in Southwest France.
Their fur grows very long and wolly and then becomes dreadlock-like.
Although we did not see them in their "clothes"---they are known for wearing coulettes, yes, a type of pant for each leg (often of gingham or striped fabric) to protect their legs from the salt marsh insects.
