Cro-Magnon Caves: Lascaux II

The world's most famous cave paintings are at Lascaux.  These caves were discovered accidentally in 1940 by 4 kids and a dog.  From 1948-1963, more than a million people climbed thought the caves, and because of that, the precious art deteriorated more during that perid than the previous 15,000 years; and so, the caves were closed.

These photos were taken from postcards because no photos are allowed. The "exact replica" (to less than a centimemter) of the caves is a 40-yard stretch which shows 90 percent of the original paintings and was opened right next to the original in 1983.

The artists making the reproductions used the same ground rock mixed with water for the color, the same tools and techniques of their predecessors of 15-17,000 years ago.

I have seen these photos in many art books, so to see them "for real" was astonishing and meaningful.  The guide said that no one knows why they were created---I say, it's because they were made by humans, who are created by God, and it is a natural  part of that humanity to respond to life's environment in creative ways.
