Beaune: Hotel Dieu

The Hundred Years War and the Black Death (the plague) devastated Beaune.  The chancellor of Burgundy, Nicholas Rolin, had this place built for "his people." He believed every patient deserved dignity, and provided each patient with a pewter jug, mug, bowl and plate.  As cozy as these beds seem, there were two to a bed during the epidemic.
