Avignon: St. Benezet Bridge

No doubt, you are humming the 15th century nursery-rhyme ditty: "sur le pont d'Avignon, on y danse, on y danse...sur le pont d'Avignon, on y danse tous en rond"

The bridge was built between 1171-1185 and was the only bridge crossing the mighty Rhone River during the Middle Ages.

It was damaged several times by floods, and finally in 1668, lacking a government stimulus package, the people decided not to rebuild it...and so for more than 100 years Avignon had no bridge across the Rhone.  Only four arches survive today, but imagine a 22 arch, 3,000-foot-long bridge.
